Heels struck the tile floor with a sense of urgency. Lt. Heather Solomon was General Maihan’s secretary and she just received the worse news. When she reached the commanders door she pounded on it with one fist, and didn’t let up until the door opened with a whoosh of air. “Yes?” he looked up briefly from his desk, by the sound of his voice he was perturbed. “Sir….” She said gasping for breath, “ Councilman Therius just called for all soldiers to go to war within the next few months. The whole academy sir, faculty and students” Raes stood up and looked directly at her. He didn’t pull on his mask and he just looked at her with those white iris eyes. She took a step back, he was angry and his rage was about to find an outlet. Instead he calmed his breath and sighed deeply. At 31 he still looked young and still moved with the ease and strength of someone half his age, but his military experience was great and his bearing even greater in the presence of a subordinate.
“Lieutenant,” she stood at attention ready to receive his orders, “At ease” he mumbled and she relaxed, “ I am going to call the Council, the school is not ready, we do not have nearly the personnel we need to go to war” she simply nodded, she knew this was not part of her orders. “ I want you to take something down to the maintenance bay, in my quarters is an old scooter, I want you to leave it infront of Osiris. There’s a note with it, don’t read it.” She nodded and saluted, “Yes sir” he waved a hand and she scooted out quickly. He wished he could have finished it, he just couldn’t ever find the time. When he took it from those boys so many years ago he was going to return it, but the time slipped away from him then too. He knew this would be his last battle, the school had fewer then 300 students and faculty combined. Osiris would be pulled out of his retirement, this made him smirk a little bit. He picked up the phone with that same sneer on his face, dialing a few numbers, when it finally picked up he pushed a button and set down the receiver. A screen appeared in the air in front of him.
An elder gentleman appeared on the screen, his grey hair was thinning on top and his face was wrinkled, his blue eyes were stern yet flinched when they met Raes’ white ones. “ Councilman, I am General Raes Maihan” The man interrupted, “I know who you are General, get to the business” Raes cleared his throat, if there was one thing he couldn’t stand was rudeness. “Councilman, my school is not prepared, we have less then 300 personnel in the academy, faculty and students.” The councilman scoffed, “ I don’t care if it is you by yourself General, the academy is going to war in 6 months, you have till then to be ready. Our lines out there are slowly faltering and we need fresh troops. So train what you must and lets get them out there where their job requires them to be!” With that the line went dead. Raes picked up the nearest object at hand, it happened to be his chair and he flung it at the door. It hit with a crash breaking into a dozen pieces.
He grabbed the helmet and put it on quickly and walked out the door, a few students and other teachers were standing outside, inquisitive. “I need a new chair” all of them scurried away to get one. He sighed a bit and walked slowly to the elevator and hit the button to the maintenance bay. It was only a few moments, before he was smelling the comforting smell of grease and fuel. “Officer on Deck!” was called as soon as he exited the elevator, the voice echoing through the hangar. He just raised his hand, “Carry on!” was called out and he kept walking toward Osiris. The scooter sat infront of it as ordered, the note taped to the control panel. He laughed a bit and looked at it compared to the mech. “It has been so long since I fixed something just for the hell of it.” His gloved fingers caressed the note silently, “ To the girl with the most beautiful brown eyes” was the only thing written on the envelope. It had taken him years to think of that on the outside. Nothing on the note linked it to him, he didn’t know why he felt the need to hide it, he just did for some reason. He guessed that was why he created the persona of Lt. Reyes, maybe so he could be close to all things he liked. He stared up at Osiris for a few minutes, “Well old friend, I suppose we are off for battle again, and this time we may not survive it. We will go out fighting though” he laughed a little bit, but it didn’t end he just kept laughing. Finally his laughter died down, “Look after this for me?” he inquired as he walked away, patting the seat of the scooter.
He walked over to an intercom system that they had interspaced throughout the school, of course it required a thumbprint to use, to keep the students from sending out false messages. “ Attention: This is General Maihan speaking, there will be an assembly in the amphitheater tomorrow morning, everyone must attend and all activities will be suspended for that day. I say again, Assembly tomorrow morning 0900 all other activities are suspended, attendance is mandatory. Nothing further.”
